Meet Thalia!
Few people can say they’ve grown up professionally at Memorial Regional Health quite like Thalia Barnes.
Thalia first joined MRH at age 17 as a CNA on the Med/Surgery floor while still in high school. Today, seven years later, she serves as an Emergency Room Nurse, helping patients and families navigate some of life’s most unexpected and challenging moments.
“As a high school student, I started thinking healthcare might be the right path for me,” Thalia said. “Once I had direct patient care experience, I quickly realized nursing was what I wanted to pursue.”
In her role in the Emergency Department, Thalia works alongside physicians, nurses, and emergency department technicians to triage patients, receive ambulance arrivals, stabilize emergencies, and provide treatment during critical medical events. She also supports family members as they navigate the uncertainty and stress that often accompany emergencies.
Growing up professionally at MRH has given Thalia a unique perspective on the community she serves. Over the years, she has built relationships with patients and families while learning firsthand the importance of coordinated care and follow-up resources.
“I always keep in mind that the people we treat are our neighbors, our mail carriers, or maybe a friend’s family member,” she said. “I strive to provide the same care I would want for my own family.”
That commitment extends beyond patient care. Thalia is passionate about education and helping the next generation of healthcare professionals succeed. In addition to her work in the Emergency Department, she serves as a Neonatal Resuscitation instructor and frequently mentors nursing students during clinical rotations and capstone experiences.
“I really enjoy educating and helping new nurses grow,” she said.
Her dedication to learning is something she models herself. In December 2025, Thalia earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN), continuing her commitment to expanding her knowledge and skills for the benefit of her patients.
When asked what she loves most about her job, Thalia doesn’t hesitate.
“I love being a nurse and everything that comes with being an ER nurse,” she said. “From traumas and emergencies to helping parents navigate fevers, every day is different.”
She also credits the Emergency Department team for creating an environment where people feel supported and connected. “The ER team is truly like a big family,” she said. “It feels like home, and I’m thankful for the support we give each other every day.”
That spirit of teamwork extends beyond the Emergency Department.
“As an ER nurse, she is always running and still makes the time to help with needs in Radiology when called,” said the colleague who nominated Thalia as an Unsung Hero. “She always asks if the techs need help, and if a call is made for assistance, she is often the first one there. I would gladly have her take care of me or any member of my family.”
Outside of work, Thalia enjoys spending time with her family. She and her husband have a three-year-old son and are eagerly awaiting the arrival of a daughter this July. Whether she’s baking, camping, golfing, or simply enjoying the outdoors with her family, she treasures opportunities to make memories together.
The MRH Way is about caring for our community, supporting one another, and continuously growing to better serve those around us. Thalia, thank you for the dedication, compassion, and leadership you bring to MRH every day. Your commitment to patients, families, and future healthcare professionals makes a lasting difference in our community.
