Unsung Hero: David Campbell

Meet David!

When it comes to identifying infections and guiding the right treatment, accuracy matters. At Memorial Regional Health, David Campbell leads microbiology testing that helps providers determine the most effective care for their patients.

Much of David’s work happens behind the scenes, but its impact is felt throughout the hospital. He works closely with physicians, providers, and nurses to help guide appropriate antibiotic therapy and uses advanced PCR testing to identify viruses that may be making patients sick. His expertise helps ensure patients receive the right treatment at the right time.

While David describes himself as a “lab rat,” his role still requires strong communication and collaboration. “I primarily work with physicians, providers, and nurses regarding specimen collection and results,” he said. “I do my best to meet people where they are, emphasizing warmth and professionalism when working with my internal customers.”

David’s path to the lab started with plans for a different career. After being discharged from the U.S. Navy, he set his sights on medical school and pursued laboratory science as his undergraduate degree. But along the way, he discovered just how much he enjoyed working in the lab. “I found the work so enjoyable, I never pursued medical school,” he said.

Later in life, after his children were grown, David and his family decided to become traveling lab technicians. His very first assignment brought him to Craig in 2014. After continuing to travel for several years, he returned to MRH in 2018 for another assignment — and this time, decided to stay for good.

David has now been part of the MRH team full-time since 2018 (with a brief break during COVID) and values the close-knit culture of the laboratory team. “We have a small group that works together seamlessly,” he said. “I haven’t met anyone yet who has an ego or can’t work with others.”

Though most of his work happens behind the scenes, David occasionally steps in to help patients directly. On those rare occasions, he makes it a point to ease anxiety and create a positive experience. “I always try to be calm, patient, and helpful,” he said. “I keep a few jokes ready so that when I leave the room, the patient is smiling.”

David’s impact hasn’t gone unnoticed. He was nominated not once, but twice by colleagues who work alongside him.

“David is always so friendly and willing to help,” one colleague shared. “He is a true problem solver and is a pleasure to work with.”

Another colleague added, “David is a great asset to the lab, mentoring our students, training new hires, and continually improving our Microbiology department. He brings in-depth antibiotic and infectious disease expertise that helps support our patients’ treatment.”

Outside of work, David enjoys spending time with his family, including his furry family, and playing guitar. He also has a passion for travel and has visited nine different countries and every continent except Antarctica… so far.

The MRH Way is about teamwork, expertise, and meeting people where they are. Whether that’s at the bedside or behind the scenes in the lab. David, thank you for the knowledge, dedication, and quiet impact you bring to patient care at MRH every day.
