Service Highlights

Stretta

If you suffer from reflux, you know just how much it can impact your quality of life. Maybe you have terrible bouts of heartburn that keep you from eating the foods you enjoy. You could be experiencing a burning sensation in your chest and throat. Maybe you are taking antacids or anti-reflux medication, but you still suffer.

Your doctor may have diagnosed you with GERD or gastroesophageal reflux disease. GERD is common, affecting one in three Americans.

“GERD is usually caused by a weakness in the lower esophageal sphincter (LES). Essentially, it is a one-way valve that relaxes when we eat and swallow, then clamps back up when we are done. It can stop working for various reasons,” said Dr. Jeff Womble, MRH general surgeon.

Memorial Regional Health is thrilled to offer a new solution for GERD that’s producing great results. It’s called Stretta. It’s a highly effective and minimally invasive procedure that offers an alternative to invasive surgery or implants. Stretta Therapy uses radiofrequency (RF) energy to strengthen and improve the function of the LES to prevent regurgitation or reflux.

Vein Ablation

Do you suffer from leg pain, skin changes or varicose veins? You might have venous reflux disease, and you could be an ideal candidate for vein ablation treatment from Memorial Regional Health’s General Surgery team.

A disease found in the leg, venous reflux disease occurs when the valves that help carry blood from your legs to your heart no longer properly function, causing blood to collect in your legs. As a result, the veins in your legs could expand, lose their shape, protrude from beneath your skin and develop into varicose veins.

Factors that contribute to this disease include age (40+), gender, family history, prolonged standing, heavy lifting, multiple pregnancies and obesity. Signs and symptoms include varicose veins, swelling, aching, cramping, heaviness or tiredness, itching, restlessness and open skin sores. Without treatment, signs and symptoms may progress and significantly impact your quality of life.

Share your symptoms with your primary care provider. If you’re a candidate for vein ablation, he or she can then connect you with experienced MRH general surgeons.
