Billing Update: Statements get a new look

Our new billing statements at MRH aim to make the billing process easier

Earlier this year, we asked our community to give us feedback about how we were doing at Memorial Regional Health. An overwhelming number of responses came back about our billing.

To be frank, most people didn’t like it. We’ve been working to make our billing process better from beginning to end. One of the first major changes we’ve made is revising our statements. Our new statements are much easier to read and give our patients the information they need to understand the bill.

Below is an actual example of our new statements.

LOOK: An example of an MRH billing statement.

  1. Date of Service – this is the date the service was provided to the patient.
  2. Encounter Provider – this will indicate who the patient saw, or which physician ordered a test.
  3. Statement Date – this is the date that the statement was generated. Our goal is to get statements to patients in less than 30 days.
  4. Account Summary – this is a snapshot of the charges and payments. The Total Charges indicate the total charge for the encounter. Total Adjustments is the amount that is automatically deducted from the total charges based upon the individual contracts between the hospital and the insurance company. Total Payments is the amount paid to MRH by the insurance company. Your Total Balance is what is owed by you to the hospital. This amount owed is based on the agreement you have with your insurance company (co-pays and deductible).
  5. “Amount Due by” Date – this date is now 30 days following the statement date.
  6. Current Accounts – this tells the patient if the services were provided in the hospital or the clinic. Please note services such as X-rays and labs are billed as hospital services regardless of the location of the service provided. For example, if a patient has an X-ray done at Rapid Care, the X-ray will be billed separately as a hospital service.

We do monitor calls to ensure that the services being provided by our billing team meet the needs of our patients. We are working hard to ensure that after our patients receive excellent healthcare, they are also receiving excellent service from our billing team.

Cash, self-pay discounts

Memorial Regional Health offers discounts for cash/self-pay patients as well as to patients who want to quickly pay on balances due after insurance has paid.

For those wishing to pay cash at time of service (nothing will be billed to insurance), we offer a 20% discount.

For balances owed after insurance has paid, we offer a 25% discount if the balance is paid within the first 30 days of the first (initial) statement.
